Whether it’s your hobbies, interests, workplace, or career, young people are starving for the opportunity to learn about and experience future possibilities. While growing up, many of us adults regularly “rubbed shoulders” with older generations. These moments often expanded our horizons and pushed us into worlds we never would have visited on our own, but they also helped us develop greater confidence and social-skills. Today, studies show that many kids live in what they call an “opportunity gap”, because they simply don’t have connections that will expose them to new worlds and experiences, like we did. Unfortunately, without these opportunities, they don’t possess the same hope and perspective as other young people. This is leading to lower social/emotional health, greater drop-out rates, less post-secondary educational pursuits, a higher poverty rate, and more overall negative and destructive behaviors.
